Euphotic Zone Metabolism in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre Based on Oxygen Dynamics

چکیده

We report in situ rates of gross oxygen production (GOP), community respiration (R), and net (NCP) the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre derived from mixed layer O2/Ar measurements. The measurements were conducted between November 2013 January 2019 at site Hawaii Ocean Time-series program. Biological O2 concentration anomalies showed a consistent diel variation, with values increasing during daytime due to decreasing nighttime respiration. In GOP R, determined these variations, covaried but no clear seasonal pattern, averaging 0.9 0.8 mmol m−3 d−1, respectively. NCP ranged −1.2 16.6 m−2 d−1. Our analyses indicate that certain times year diapycnal flux across base may be non-negligible and, therefore, fraction O2/Ar-derived form below layer. climatology (down 150 m) was also estimated using near-monthly changes dissolved concentrations. These calculations allowed us estimate for entire euphotic zone (0–150 m), which shows pronounced seasonality, maximum April-May minimum December, when ecosystem becomes temporarily heterotrophic. Annual 2.1 ± 0.6 mol yr−1, approximately 1.7 export C through sinking particles captured sediment traps m.

Particle distributions and dynamics in the euphotic zone of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

During the summer of 2012, we used laser diffractometry to investigate the temporal and vertical variability of the particle size spectrum (1.25–100 mm in equivalent diameter) in the euphotic zone of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Particles measured with this optical method accounted for;40% of the particulate carbon stocks (<202 mm) in the upper euphotic zone (25–75 m), as estimated using...

Bioavailability of dissolved organic phosphorus in the euphotic zone at Station ALOHA, North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

The biologically available phosphorus (BAP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations and phosphorus (P) uptake rates within the euphotic zone (0–175 m) were measured on eight cruises between October 2000 and November 2001 to Sta. ALOHA (22.758N, 1588W) in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The SRP concentrations in the upper 100 m ranged from 7 to 84 nmol P L21, with a mean concent...

Net community production in the deep euphotic zone of the subtropical North Pacific gyre from glider surveys

Seagliders, deployed through most of 2005 in the subtropical North Pacific gyre, made measurements of temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen to quantify net community production (NCP) at Station A LongTerm Oligotrophic Habitat Assessment (ALOHA) of the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) using an oxygen mass balance approach. A ‘bowtie’-shaped pattern, 50 km by 50 km in size was repeatedly trav...

Microbiome of Trichodesmium Colonies from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

Filamentous diazotrophic Cyanobacteria of the genus Trichodesmium, often found in colonial form, provide an important source of new nitrogen to tropical and subtropical marine ecosystems. Colonies are composed of several clades of Trichodesmium in association with a diverse community of bacterial and eukaryotic epibionts. We used high-throughput 16S rRNA and nifH gene sequencing, carbon (C) and...

Quantifying subtropical North Pacific gyre mixed layer primary productivity from Seaglider observations of diel oxygen cycles

Using autonomous underwater gliders, we quantified diurnal periodicity in dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and temperature in the subtropical North Pacific near the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) Station ALOHA during summer 2012. Oxygen optodes provided sufficient stability and precision to quantify diel cycles of average amplitude of 0.6μmolkg . A theoretical diel curve was fit to daily observat...
